(*)The Waterboys - The Secret Life Of The Waterboys
(Chrysalis)
It was quite a surprise to find this one. It is a collection of
B-sides, outtakes, and live tracks from 1981-1985. That Was
The River is a fast version of This Is The Sea with
Tom Verlaine on guitar. Don't Bang The Drum is done with
just piano, sax, trumpet, and violin in a big theatre. If you
love The Waterboys before they went raggle-taggle, this is the
collection for you. (Hmmm... #1)
Whirled Peas - War & Peas (Demo)
This is the first cassette sent into this zine for review. I hope
that other bands will do the same in the future. I will review
just about everything sent in. Whirled Peas are a surf band based
in Austin, Texas. The production is a little flat, but the music
is quite good. They cover R.E.M., Shadowy Men On A Shadowy
Planet, and The Munsters Theme. If I lived in Austin I would
definitely check these guys out. To get a copy you can write to:
Whirled Peas, 2324 Aldford Dr., Austin, TX 78745. (Hmmm... #2)
(*)Link Wray - Mr. Guitar: Original Swan Recordings (Norton)
This was quite an introduction for me to one of the most
influential guitarists of the 50's and 60's. I had heard his
songs covered over and over by many of the current instro bands,
but I had never heard the original recordings until now (except
the songs on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack). There are many single
cd compilations out there, but for $20 you can't go wrong with
this double cd package. It even comes with a nifty Link Wray
guitar pick. All of the hits are here: "Jack The
Ripper", "Ace of Spades", "Batman
Theme", "Rumble", "Run Chicken Run", and
many more. An essential purchase. (Hmmm... #5)
