Interview With

Thee Phantom 5ive

These guys may not know how to speak, but man do they know how to play a mean rawk n' roll instrumental!! If you want a sample of what these boys from Tennessee can deliver, check out their hot new single on Dionysus called Thee Phantom 5ive Play Guitars Galore.

The Continental: How long has Thee Phantom 5ive been around?

Neal: Too long.

Todd: Since 1992 if you do not count the sissies we stole the name from. Surprising how long considering the inept quality of our tunes.

The Continental: Where and when was your first show?

Neal & Todd: July 3, 1993 in the big Nashville Park, Centennial Park. That's from both of us and is true.

The Continental: What are your favorite songs to perform live?

Neal: Songs that we don't pervertform live.

Todd: Hell, I dunno...how 'bout Superamerica?

The Continental: What was the first song you came up with?

Neal: Sea And Ski Me.

Todd: The one chord opus, Thrown Rod.

The Continental: What kinda gear do you all use?

Neal: Ludwig, Yamaha drums, 55-gallon drums, and homemade drums.

Todd: Whatever we can borrow. At the moment that would be Fender Showmans, pro reverb, twin, '64 black face reverb unit, Precision bass, Mosrite and Harmony bass thru Ampeg B-15 Fliptop... Oops, you probably meant, "What kinda picks do you use"? I make all of our picks.

The Continental: What groups are you all into?

Neal: Moody Blues, Phantom 5, Molly Hatchet, and White Lion.

Todd: Sawyer Brown, paramilitary groups, church groups, Mummies, Jerry Cole, A.A. groups, Marxist groups, Swingin' Neckbreakers, knitting groups.

The Continental: What was it like recording your latest Dionysus release?

Neal: A nightmare not soon erased from my bad memory.

Todd: A real kick... We did it in a buddy's bedroom (I know that sounds sooo sexual) and got drunk and argued. It was 98 degrees and I hurt my head falling down, as a matter of fact…

The Continental: Tell me of any unusual occurrences you've had at your shows.

Neal: Unusual? Lots of people being there.

Todd: Mostly stupid stuff happens and too recently, I might add... I did jump up on my bass amp and knock it all over with me landin' on top. This happens regularly and a man with more pride would not be tellin' you this. I also threw up on stage once but that was in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where they don't care and that after hangin' with Thee Penetrators.

The Continental: What's your favorite car?

Neal: Delahay, Cullingham, Jensen, Rolls-Royce, bookmobiles, and the '94 Ford Escort.

Todd: My cement mixer.

The Continental: What is your favorite Frank Sinatra song?

Neal: I wanna ignore this question... Fave Blackfoot song? Tomcattin'.

Todd: Bob Seger's Turn The Page.

The Continental: What is your favorite cocktail?

Neal: Cheap whiskey on a hot day.

Todd: That would be vodka and Dr. Pepper.

The Continental: What are your plans for the rest of 1997?

Neal: I have not finalized my plans for '93! How the hell can I finalize a damn thing for 96-97, Sean?

Todd: I plan on learnin' to tune a bass guitar and then I am gonna concentrate on learnin' to read. I also wanna sink some time into my used chalk business.

The Continental: Do you have any final words for the readers of The Continental?

Neal: R.I.P. Rest In Piss...

Todd: Kaput, it's a wrap, end, decisive, culmination, ultimate, definitive…
