The
Dynotones – Beach Party A Go-Go (Mad Society/Split 7)
The
Dynotones have long been a favorite of many surf aficionados. Their
musical influences span the period of about 1960 – 1964 – you
really don’t hear much else in their surf sound. It’s like
listening to a master tape of some forgotten band that’s been
sitting in the vault for 43 years. With a little more though, maybe
they have been influenced a bit by The Ghastly Ones or Satan’s
Pilgrims, especially on tunes like “Curse Of Malta”, but hey, even
those bands are pretty trad. Their take on the classic “Ground
Swell” is absolutely mind-blowing – the band’s awesome and
there’s some absolutely spot on sax work. Next they turn on the
splashy, drippy reverb of The Astronauts or Fathoms with “Endless
Dream”, punctuated by some Davie Allen style fuzz riffs. There are
14 great tunes here, wrapped up in some incredible graphics done by
Rockin’ Jelly Bean.
