Satan's Pilgrims - The Caped Crusaders Of Instrumental Surf Music
Satan's Pilgrims are an instrumental surf band based in Portland, Oregon. Getting their start back in 1992, the group has released three full-length albums and at least three 7" records on a variety of Northwest labels. Bellingham's Estrus Records released their debut single, appropriately titled Haunted House Of Rock. Since then they have recorded for Empty, K, and Blood Red Vinyl.
Their latest release, Around The World With Satan's Pilgrims on Empty Records, is a musical journey taking the listener to the four corners of the earth. From the romance and mystery of Spain to the bossa nova sounds of Brazil, Satan's Pilgrims do it all. You'll instantly recognize the melodies of Antonio Carlos Jobim's Wave and The Godfather Theme, but its originals like Devil's Punchbowl, La Cazuela, and Hamilton Beach that really make this a must have for the surf enthusiast.
The band recreates the classic sound of early 60's surf through their use of vintage Fender gear and their youthful enthusiasm. With three guitarists in the band, one can't help but think of The Astronauts when listening to their recordings or seeing them perform live. It is pretty amazing to watch these guys interweave the different guitar parts into one cohesive sound. They are also a band that really gets the crowd going. After a few warm-up numbers the audience is on their feet and dancin' up a storm.
Hot on the heels of their CD release on Empty, Satan's Pilgrims have several new releases in the works. The Mondo Drive-In compilation on Blood Red Vinyl just came out featuring sixteen bands doing movie-related tunes, and the Ready, Steady, Drink! compilation on Mai Tai Records.
You can catch Satan's Pilgrims live at the 3-B Tavern on Saturday, May 17th with Tacoma's Girl Trouble and Seattle's Nightcaps. It will be an evening of surf, rock n' roll, and lounge music from three of the Northwest's coolest combos.
