These cats down in Arizona play a hot mix of traditional surf instros sprinkled with an occassional garage vocal stomper. When we grabbed these guys for our label they had two 7" EP's out - each going out of print soon after their release. We are proud to have released their debut full-length CD - 'Play With Fire' by The Del-Vamps. They will appear on the upcoming Double Crown Records compilation: 'Takin' Out The Trash: A Tribute To The Trashmen'.
3/8/99 - THE DEL-VAMPS CALL IT QUITS
The scoop from guitarist Matt tha Kat:
The Del-Vamps surf band from sunny Phoenix, Arizona has decided to call it quits with the parting of our drummer, Erin Scroggins. Erin and his wife are expecting another child soon and may also be moving school districts, which both added to his decision to leave. Erin will devote all of his time to his family and his teaching/coaching career. He was and still is a great friend of ours and we will indeed miss him.
The rest of us guys were sitting around and decided that we were all tired of doing the surf thing, so, with the addition of Benny, former lead guitarist for the Markdowns surf band (also split up), on drums, we decided on the new name of: Otto and the Ottomans
While keeping the occasional instrumental, we will be generally in the realm of vocal rock and roll ala Trashmen, Ready Men, Kingsmen (hence the Ottomans...a play on word as well as historical choice, you turkeys you!) and of course the coolest cat of all, Bobby Fuller. Anyway, our first gig is this Wednesday night at the Cannery Row in Tempe, Arizona, opening for the Cosmonauti all the way from sunny Italia.

Here's what the press has said about 'Play With Fire' by The Del-Vamps:
"This Phoenix-raised foursome have their Dick Dale-inspired chops finely tuned on Play With Fire, their first full length release on Continental Records. All of the requisite surf elements are here on this mostly instrumental records: hollow heavy reverb, faraway monophonic vocals and guitar tremolo with a whammy bar wiggle. The Del-Vamps bring back the innocently simpler times when all that mattered was your girl, your board and the next set." -Axis Magazine
"Surf meets The Fireballs! Much of the material is surfable and jolly to boot! The boys have started with a minning debut CD. Look out for more...we are." -New Gandy Dancer
"They do the whole surf instro genre proud. This band plays surf n' roll the old-fashioned way with no cereal fillers and no fat and gristle. Just good ol' raw surf instro, heavy on the reverb and the twang, swingin' out with the tide and back again." -Micromag
"'Got Me By The Brain' has fuzz and spooky vocals bringing a Mummies trashiness to mind. The crackly vox only add to this effect. This CD should inspire you to start a band." -Trash Times
"Slick and shady, crass and trashy, the Del-Vamps piece together a tight surf/garage unit that keeps the fun in instro rock. " -Dan Feola, Get Out
