The Madeira - Sandstorm CD

It's the debut CD by The Madeira, a new Indianapolis-based combo led by Ivan Pongracic (formerly of The Space Cossacks). If you liked his former band (and who didn't?) you will absolutely flip over his new combo. In some ways this is probably similar to what a 3rd 'Cossacks CD would have sounded like, but he takes this group in directions that perhaps wouldn't have been possible before. It's got 13 great tunes (only one cover - they're saving the rest of the covers recorded during the sesions for this CD for a seperate CD-EP release set for 2006). Phil Dirt, Rick of The Volcanos and others were blown away when they heard advance copies of this release - this is sure to be one of the top releases of 2005!

Tracks: Sun & Sand - Sandstorm! - Cordoba - El Caliph - Burning Mirage - Rogue Wave - The Secret Route - Desert Drums - Ricochet - Crescent Moon - Across The Dunes - Express To Baghdad - The Oasis.

In late January 2006 The Madeira were named "Artist Of The Week" by IndianapolisMusic.net - check out the write-up here

"The Madeira ain't your baby's surf music. Taking some twang from the first definition of the genre, The Madeira plays instrumental, rumbling rock, centered on the Fender guitar and surf beats."

Intake Weekly, an Indianapolis, IN weekly newspaper, did a write-up about The Madeira in January, 2006 - you can find it here.

Here's what the press has said about 'Sandstorm':

"If there's just one word for this CD, it's Adventure. This is a superbly produced CD, not just in sound, but in arranging and writing and playing. The music is very engaging and very good! Highly recommended!"

Picks: 'Sandstorm!', 'Cordoba', 'El Caliph', 'Burning Mirage', 'Rogue Wave', 'The Secret Route', 'Desert Drums', 'Ricochet', 'Crescent Moon', 'Across The Dunes', 'Express To Baghdad', 'The Oasis'

Sun & Sand3 stars
"Sun & Sand" is a lush minute-long guitar vision of things to come. Very pretty.

Sandstorm!5 stars
Prepare to rock! "Sandstorm!" is a stunning piece of music with a heavy rhythm and great energy. The impeccable playing and production deliver this hard driving song with all the panache required. Great!

Cordoba5 stars
Infectious rhythms and thundering bass support a wonderful melody. Fire and danger, and abundant adventure. There's mystery and risk, and high adventure over every dune. Thoroughly cool!

El Caliph5 stars
Great tribal drums, the rhythm of "Mar Gaya," and a dark Middle Eastern melody line that portrays danger. This chunky and very cool track commands your attention from every angle. Wonderful!

Burning Mirage5 stars
Immense spunk and traveling adventure are evident in every dramatic bar of "Burning Mirage." The muted surf rhythm is superb!

Rogue Wave4 stars
With the stinging fire of the Atlantics, "Rogue Wave" rocks and churns, relentlessly carrying you off to the that hazardous perfect ride. Intense, powerful, and fiery!

The Secret Route4 stars
Haunting and somewhat ominous, "The Secret Route" tells a tale of a journey fraught with risk and adventure. Bing and visual, with drama and intense emotional content.

Desert Drums5 stars
The drums rock, the guitars rule, and the bass thunders. Highly infectious, "Desert Drums" virtually drags you out to your roadster for a drive down highway 1. What a fine track. It's thoroughly enjoyable and full of fire.

Ricochet5 stars
The circular riffs of "Ricochet" call on Gypsy moodiness and the Atlantics' spunk. Big drama, open space, and a panoramic visual sense. This is a huge and commanding piece of music.

Crescent Moon4 stars
Softly painting a landscape of desert mystery and intrigue, the rhythm and lead guitar compliment each other very well. Big drama in the cymbals, and a soft moodiness in the bass. Very richly arranged.

Across The Dunes5 stars
Once past the intro, "Across The Dunes" becomes a raucous and galloping number with a very engaging sound. On first listen, it draws you into its clutches. A great arrangement, great writing, and solid playing here!

Express To Baghdad5 stars
This is an Atlantics' song carried to its logical conclusion. Wonderful drums, big panoramic sound, sweeping energy, and a haunting sense. "Express To Baghdad" is very well adapted to the Madeira's sound, yet remains very complimentary to the original.

The Oasis4 stars
Softly delicate, "The Oasis" slowly moves across a sunset dune, giving a warming but distant view of a small group of palms. It's a very pretty song.

What's Up! Magazine

The Madeira’s new album, Sandstorm, is a praiseworthy work of “surf” music. Every musician in this band is extremely skilled, and as a group, they flow together masterfully.

The album starts off with a track called, “Sun & Sand,” and if you close your eyes and listen to the slow guitar humming with reverb, you can picture yourself in a desert, hot and sweaty, mirages all around you, tricking you into thinking civilization is near. As the song ends, the title track “Sandstorm!” begins, and this is the point when you stop searching, and simply embrace the mirages and all of their glory.

As the album continues, this foursome attacks every scale and rhythm that they can. Each song is well laid out, and builds to high peaks full of musical energy....

Sandstorm is right, it's like I'm on a flying carpet...
I just finished listening to the Madeira's brand new CD Sandstorm. I urge all of you who haven't already bought this CD to do so. We musicians have in common an extra sensitivity to music that really speaks to our souls or is true art. For me, my indicator is when I feel the little hairs on my neck stick up. I felt that when I first heard The Mermen, when I heard Slacktone, and now - The Madeira. There's a density to this music, there's lots going on, enough to amply reward repeated listening. This isn't music to listen to driving your car or surfing the net. You need to sit down in your most comfortable chair, dim the lights maybe, and let these guys take you on an amazing journey. Sandstorm is right, it's like I'm on a flying carpet propelled by the whirling dervishes of this music. I may not reach the levels of musicianship of these guys, nor craft such inventive, dramatic music. But after listening to this CD, I'm certainly inspired to try, and to emulate not the music itself, but the care these musicians took to fully explore their musical ideas. They may not get rich making this music, or even get to share this with a wide audience, but this CD stands as an artistic achievement and they should be proud.

5 out of 5 stars I really really really REALLY dig that Madiera CD! Ivan is on fire...

I really really really REALLY dig that Madiera CD! Ivan is on fire... his Eastern Euro sound slathers up sunscreen, fries a little falafel, and rides roughshod across a desert of sounds. 2005 was a great year for instro... sounds like 2006 will be better!
