The Boss Martian-ettes

The Boss Martian-ettes are a new rock n' roll band on the scene. Featuring the sweet n' sassy lead vocals of Tracy Martian-ette, they mix a little Collins Kids action with 50's and 60's style rock n' roll. We talked to Evan Foster about this new combo...

The Continental: So what's the story behind The Boss Martian-ettes?

Evan Foster: Well Sean it was interesting how it happened really. Here's the story: We, the Boss Martians, were working at a club one night in a real harsh logging town out by the coast here in WA state - almost a year ago it was. Honestly it was a hard, downtrodden, stinking dive called the White Owl's Butt or The Seagull's Ass or something like that - I don't remember exactly. But the place was mean. Basically we took the job because we needed the dough and the offer was real good too - it appeared that the owner of the joint was a big Sonics, Kingsmen, Wailers, and Don & the Goodtimes fan - basically the old fellow dug the NW sound, had seen us once before at a big Wailers tribute in 95 down in Tacoma, tracked me down, and called me to hire us for a coupla sets at his shitty bar. We figgered it was a good, normal, liberal, Wal-Mart kinda town - so basically we thought we were gonna get our asses kicked by some insane hillbilly loggers once we started playing. Now, before we even started to play they started asking us if we played "kickin' country", "young country", "new country & western" or that "punk rock junkie shit" from the big city so we told them we were a gospel band preaching a clean living and they laid off cause they figgered they were screwing with Holy Men - it also helped that we happened to be wearing our priest stage outfits that night anyway! I gotta say though as soon as we were set up, Scott was looking at me like he was gonna kick my ass for ever taking this job but like I said we needed the dough. So we started up, played for an hour, then decided to mellow out and take a break - that's when Scott comes up to do his usual comedy routine. He got on stage and rattled off his normal regime of adult-diaper jokes - then mocked a few crowd members in good humor but BOY was that a mistake! A hush fell over the club, everyone stopped talking, and they all looked at us blankly as to allude to the fact that they themselves wore or KNEW or were related to someone who WORE adult diapers regularly and did NOT appreciate our humor. So here's the deal - the whole joint was dead silent except for these three girls with HUGE haircuts, wild nail polish, and CRAZY high heels who were cackling their heads off - they were laughing so hard it seemed as though they were about to barf. I mean these women REALLY seemed to get a kick outta the jokes so Scott thanked them kindly for their taste in good humor and bad jokes - then, one of the nice young ladies shouted, in front of everyone in the club, "Shut your JERK MOUTH YOU DROOLING MORON before I kick you in the doo-dad". That was it - end of story - IMMEDIATELY I said to myself "these women have CLASS!" I knew that I needed to relocate the trio to Seattle, set them up in their own place, and teach them how to play instruments. I knew my quest to complete the all-girl line-up for the all-female surf, hot-rod, and garage combo the Boss Martian-ettes was OVER. It also turned out that haughty three were the daughters of the bar owner so they already dug the great NW sound being that their old man was a Northwest rock and roll fanatic and raised them up listening to nothing but the Wailers, the Sonics, and Don and the Goodtimes. Shit - you'd be a hellraiser too if all you heard as a kid was "Psycho!" - you dig? Their names are Lana (guitar), Gina (Drums), and Ju-Ju (bass) but they're deciding on some classier stage names at this time so stay tuned for the first release cause it'll have all that info. So basically that the story of the Boss Martian-ettes in a nutshell.

The Continental: Who is in the band and what instrument/s does each member play?

Evan Foster: Tracy Martian-ette on vocals and tambo, Ju-Ju Martian-ette on Bass, Gina Martian-ette (she prefers Trixon drums for that low-brow sound) and Lana Martian-ette on guitar (She insists on playing either Supro Dual Tones or Danelectro Longhorns but I'm working on getting her hip to the Fender sound). Both Ju-Ju and Lana use Fender amps exclusively.

The Continental: What type of music has influenced The Boss Martian-ettes?

Evan Foster: The list is long but here are some of their faves: The Wailers, Kingsmen, Sonics, Don & the Goodtimes, the Ventures (big time fans), the Frantics, Igor and the Maniacs, the Viceroys (Granny's!!), the Boss Martians, the Saturn V, the Untamed Youth, Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Collins Kids, Janis Martin, Kathy Marshall, The Trashwomen, LINK WRAY, Guitar Wolf, 5.6.7.8's, the Girl Bombs, the Standells, the Powder Puffs, the GTO's, Donna Loren, and the list goes on - you know the deal.

The Continental: Is the name of the band merely a way to cash in on the growing popularity of The Boss Martians?

Evan Foster: NO!! NEVER!! They INSISTED on the name!

The Continental: What was it like recording your debut release on Continental Records (due February 1998)?

Evan Foster: Well the girls had a good time - a little too MUCH of a good time I might add - I seem to worry about their drinking so much. One of their nights of drinking is enough to put most people in treatment - who knows, the girls might even meet up with the Penetrators at Betty Ford.

Anyway the gals had a blast especially with their newest instrumental Quit Lookin' Up My Dress! - it should be a hit with the teen crowd!

The Continental: What is your favorite Frank Sinatra song?

Ju-Ju: Night and Day Lana: Come Fly With Me! Gina: In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning Tracy: Nice 'n' Easy

The Continental: What should we expect in 1998 from The Boss Martian-ettes?

Evan Foster: Well Sean, expect great things - great things indeed. There's the Continental Records release of course. They also have a single coming out on Dionysus Records as well. In addition to that there's a short version of Link Wray's "Rumble" that will be released on the Dionysus Records Tigermask Compilation CD too. Plus, the girls want to get out on the road and do their first West Coast tour by next fall. If anyone wants to put out ANY Boss Martian-ettes records drop us a line - we're interested! Until next time - the girls say "See ya!!"
